Celebrate 15 Years of Creativity with a Sweet Rainbow Cupcake Drawing & Painting Lesson

This year, Viridian Art is celebrating 15 amazing years of creativity, community, art classes, and inspiring young artists throughout the San Fernando Valley and Conejo Valley! To celebrate this milestone, we’re sharing one of our favorite fun and colorful projects from our YouTube channel — a Rainbow Birthday Cupcake Art Lesson that families can enjoy at home together.

This easy step-by-step art lesson is perfect for kids ages 5+

Whether you use watercolor, crayons, oil pastels, colored pencils, or paint, this cheerful cupcake project is all about creativity, color, and celebrating art together.

What You’ll Need

One of the best things about this lesson is that you can use almost any art supplies you already have at home!

Supplies:

Pencil
Eraser
Paper
Colored pencils
Watercolors
Crayons
Oil pastels
Acrylic paint (optional)

How to Draw the Rainbow Cupcake

Draw simple cupcake shapes using basic lines and ovals
design a cake stand for your cupcake

Create layered frosting with wavy lines

add in a candle, or 15??
color in lines for the cupcake wrapper, and add in some shadiing

color or paint rainbow frosting
paint in cake and add some darker shadows
paint the plate or cake stand and add in darker shadows

The project starts by sketching the cupcake base and decorative stand using light pencil lines. Then students build fluffy frosting layers, add a candle, and finish everything with vibrant rainbow colors and watercolor shading.

This is a fantastic mixed media lesson that combines:
